So You’re Dating a Spaniard—Chelsea

It seems I do a lot of interviews with girls named Chelsea who are dating Spaniards. This is number three! If you are named Chelsea and you are also dating a Spaniard, you know where to contact me.

Chelsea6

My name is Chelsea (apparently this name attracts Spanish men, according to this blog). I’m a 24 year old California native who has been living in Madrid for the past year working as an auxiliar de conversación. My story is fairly similar to others’ who have been featured here. I studied abroad during the spring of 2011 and found that a semester wasn’t enough time in Spain. Plus, there was a dashing Spaniard waiting for me. So I came back.

So You’re Dating a Spaniard—Season

This is an interview I received last October. Eek. As you can see, I’m a bit behind on my interviews. It seems they’re never ending, but I love it. Personally, I feel a learn a bit from every person I have the privilege to interview. That said, here’s Season!

American dating Spaniard

Hi! My name is Season, and I’m 30 years old. I came to Spain for the first time in August 2004 to study abroad in San Sebastian. Coming back to the States a year later, I was completely changed and knew that my time in Spain wasn’t finished. After completing my degree at the University of Nevada Reno, I found out about the Auxiliares de Conversación program, applied, and got accepted! I spent two years teaching at La Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Irún, went back to Nevada for almost a year, and then came back to Irún to begin teaching English at a private academy. During this time I met my husband and knew that Spain was the place for me!

Things Bicultural Couples Do

Bicultural and/or international couples (in my case, both) have some habits that can seem odd for an outsider. Most of the time, when Mario and I take a trip, we end up speaking a weird hodgepodge of English and Spanish and Spanglish, which confuses the locals who just want to place us in a little box. (Oh, Americans; or Oh, Spaniards.) But no, we’re not so easily categorized or identified.

Mix up traditions

I wear my wedding ring (alianza) on my right hand because I didn’t have the traditional engagement ring and wedding ring match set. I wanted everyone who saw me, in Spain and in the US, to know I was taken, so I figured I’d wear one ring on each finger. Problem solved. Mario, on the other hand (literally), wears his on the other hand, his left. Why? It’s more comfortable. So we mix up traditions. So what?

We also chose to say our vows both in English and in Spanish, because those words in our native languages were and are really important to us.

Oh yeah, and we had two weddings. We’ve decided we could have one every year. There are lots of states, after all.

So You’e Dating a Spaniard—Paige

Are you following me yet on Google+? If not, please head on over to Y Mucho Más’ Google + page to follow me. You can also follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

Oh yes, we’re back with my famous So You’re Dating a Spaniard blog series. I haven’t been super creative lately, and I’d like to blame that on the fact that Mario and I have been watching (rewatching for me) season after season of Breaking Bad. (Spoiler alert: best series ever.) But that’s okay, because it gives me a chance to feature more of you all who are dating more Spaniards. Onward! Today I’m featuring Paige, who blogs at The Town Mouse. Let’s get started!

Paige Milli

Hi, my name is Paige and I’m a 24-year-old Texan now living in Madrid. My first taste of Spain was in 2010 when I studied abroad in Seville. After graduating college in 2011, I was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach English in Madrid. One year turned into two, and now I’ll be starting my third year in Spain. Although my life has changed a lot from days and nights spent roaming the streets of Seville, my love and curiosity for Spain keeps growing.
